Create winning banner ads for the iBird Guide to Birds app
This job is very simple
I have 3 banner ads on our web site to advertise iBird, the best selling bird app on the iPhone and Android platforms. The banners are really old in the tooth and in need of modernizing. To make your job easy I have suggested a number of ideas below for the banners. Of course you’re encouraged to come up with your own ideas, these are just to kick start your brain. Nothing is off limits, no matter how outrageous; the idea behind the banner is to get people who are visiting the site to think “hey they have an app that does everything this web site can. And it goes on my phone”.
What are these banners about?
For those of you who like to pay attention (and likely win the contest) this web site gets 4 million visitors a year who saw a bird and want to know what kind of bird it is. The web site is called “whatbird” and has some easy to use tools to help you identify the species when you only remember a few things such as its color or maybe its shape. We call this a “bird search engine”. You can see the search engine here: http://identify.whatbird.com/mwg/_/0/attrs.aspx. Click or tap on any bird name to see all the information about it in the species account. Here is the account for the Acorn Woodpecker: http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/17…ecker.aspx
What makes the whatbird web site special?
What makes the whatbird site so popular are the 944 species in the web site’s database. Perhaps the most unique feature of these pages is that species has a gorgeous hand drawn painting of the bird. For each species there are also dozens of photographs, migration maps of where the bird hangs out and even all the songs the birds sing. These paintings and bird song recordings are what draw thousands of visits every hour.
What the iBird app does
The iBird app installs all the information of the whatbird web site, including the paintings, songs and search engine, on your smartphone or tablet so you can use it in the field. How cool is that? In essence iBird replaces the heavy printed field guides that people used to lug around in their backpacks. We created this app way back in 2008 when the iPhone was only 6 months old and there were just 10,000 apps in the store. Today there are almost a billion iPhones, 2 million apps and yet after 9 years iBird is still considered the best app for identifying birds. I’m not kidding. Look at the reviews…we have a perfect 5 out of 5 star average rating. Besides being a well made app, perhaps what got the world to recognize that an app could replace a book was the incredibly popular television ad that Steve Jobs put iBird in: http://ibird.com/itchy/ Do you remember this from April 2009?
Talk about the banners specs
The idea for the banners is to cause people visiting whatbird to click on the link that takes them to the product page for iBird in the Android or Apple app store. The way we think to do this is to show off the app with an intriguing tag line that gets the potential customer “this could help me”. The specifications for the ad are 735 x 190 pixels at 72 dpi. The final format for the final deliverables are PSD files so that we can make any small adjustments. You can deliver your mockups for the contest as PNGs or JPGs. You don’t need to finish any of the mockups, but rather just show enough to get the idea across and show me you have some good ideas.
Below are a number of ideas you can steal. I’ve also attached the original banners PSD files to this project.
Ideas for banners?
Here are some ideas I had for making over these banners. They are just ideas, you are welcome, and encouraged even, to come up with your own cool ideas, but this should at least give you an idea of the range of ideas I am comfortable with.

Why no guarantee?
I've been using 99Designs for 6 years and have had some wonderful designs created by the artists in that time. However I was pretty disappointed with the contributions the last time I posted a job. I don't know if it was the job itself or if something has changed in the artists that use the web site. But I decided next time I was not going to guarantee the job until I saw that the contributors were up to the standards I expect. If you look at my track record you will see I've been hiring people for years and paying really good amounts for the work.
What I can promise is if I hire you to do this job I will pay the same amount for any ideas you have beyond the 3 banners. In other words if you finish the 3 and I pick them and you want to do 3 more, I will pay you the same amount per banner that I pay in the contest. So if its $100 per banner and you want to do 3 more, and you are willing to at least do a rough mockup so I know what I am getting, I will pay $100 for each of those once they are done.
