The coming-of-age tale of a young woman who wants to be a painter but whose impoverished background and resulting fear of lifelong poverty are holding her back. It is set in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 2001.
This woman is 21 years of age, Caucasian with curly dark hair. Her lover and muse is a rock climber and international aid worker (male, 23 years of age, Caucasian with long red hair and freckles). After their brief summer affair, painting him from memory becomes an obsession for her, and this is what eventually drives her to centre her life around art.
(Note: If a person(s) is featured on the cover, we prefer partial, back, or side shots, which leave the actual features of the character(s) to the readers’ imaginations. Any nudity needs to be discrete and natural (NOT sexy) with no genitals or breasts showing.)
The cover could feature the main character(s); could feature Vancouver, Canada, or Avignon, France, as background; could have references to painting/photography; could reference the primary colours—red, blue and yellow (novel is divided into three sections with these as titles, in this order).
Could try to capture one of these scenes from the novel: the female character in a chair sketching the male character naked on the yellow sheet of a bed; or the female character swimming naked in the ocean, perhaps on an inner tube, perhaps with the backdrop of the Vancouver Coastal Mountains, perhaps with the male character; or the female character dropping a letter into a red Canada Post mailbox under falling snow, perhaps with the background of an impoverished trailer park; or art pieces—sketchings, paintings, sketchbooks, etc.—spread all over an apartment or floor, some or all of which feature a redheaded man.
These are just ideas—feel free to get creative while keeping things literary, focused, and uncluttered.
