This is a book about a disgraced wizard finding redemption in his quest to stop a god from coming to earth and destroying all mankind. It's urban fantasy, takes place in modern day Japan, and is fairly dark, serious and graphic.
One of the main images in the book is the giant centipede. It recurs often and the god at the end takes this form. It's an insectile god. I like to think in terms of chemicals, pheromones, contagion. The tarantula wasp lays its eggs in tarantulas and the babies hatch and eat their way out. So one theme is the centipede, the other is infection from within.
I'm looking for a simple image that's graphic and visceral and conveys the mood of the piece. There's a book called "A Darker Shade of Magic" that shows an overhead view of someone walking from a red dot into a black dot. That's significant to the book, but also, when viewed in thumbnail on Amazon, is still a vibrant looking image.
One of the things I don't like is when a fantasy cover, when viewed on the main shopping page of a website, just looks like a blue or orange blur (Blue for night time titles and orange for desert based titles). So it would be helpful if you look at your image in the 1.5"x1" size that it'll appear on amazon and make sure that the title and central image are still strong at that size.
I'd go for something that draws the eye to the center rather than, say, a person standing in a landscape. I've provided some links below to some examples of what I mean by a single visceral image. The one of 1984 by George Orwell has, I think, a bit small of a font for the title.
Also, for H is for Hawk and Darker Shade of Magic, I like that both of these have kind of creative fonts that are still readable. Think [instectile, contagion] for the font.
The title of the book is Greeth and my name is Charles LaFave and those two things need to appear on the cover. No other words, no "A novel by" or anything like that. Just the title and author name. And if you're looking at the small version of the cover and see the title clearly and not necessarily my name clearly that's okay. Title and image are the most important to me, and I understand that I have a longish name.
So to recap, some concepts: centipedes, contagion, infection, radiation, eating their way out, pheromones, death, decay.
I don't expect anyone to use all of those together. I'd say mix and match, go with your gut, try to create whatever visceral image comes to mind from that.
And I feel like this one is a little busy, but I really like it because of the style and layers they built:
And here's a great example of a simple, visceral image. If you've played video games, you probably recognize this, but doesn't it create sort of a sense of "being overwhelmed" with just simple shapes?
And I know that's asking a lot. But I've seen some amazing art from the designers here and I know you guys will come up with things I haven't even imagined.
