Randal Licato. I'm a self-pub/indie writer, in need of a custom paperback book cover art
I write self-pub novels, currently through amazon createspace. allegorical fantasy, adventure, sci-fi and thriller, or a combo of all of them, with intended audience to be mostly young adult
I need a custom cover art for my YA novella. I publish through createspace, and will need a full wrap-around paperback cover. The final art needs to be high-res. over 300dpi to meet their requirements, and also be enlarged for posters. I do not know the exact amount of pages yet, as things are being shifted, but the approximate page count is 250 on cream paper. 5x8. Final files need to be at least a Jpeg and PDF.
Details:
-Book Title: THE OTHER SIDE
-Author: RANDAL LICATO
-Teaser Phrase: The Crow is always watching.
-Back synopsis: On the way to the public library, Grace ends up in a destructive earthquake. The road splits down the middle, plunging her into the darkness, into another world, where the average crow is something else...and they've been waiting for her.
-Dimension: 5x8
-Desired style for cover:
I prefer the cover art to be 100% commercial and royalty free, and prefer more custom/illustrated/graphic art, Rather than the photographic, or stock image look. However, I am open to ideas and different styles...If the images are manipulated in a way that its hard to tell, that's perfectly great...I can also try to provide photos of my own that you can manipulate for the art.
What I'd like the cover art to look like:
As the first idea: I would like for the cover to look similar to the original I created, which I lost in a computer crash, but doesn't need to look exactly like it. feel free to get creative with the idea.
Mood: gritty, intense, mysterious, yet eye catching.
On the front, is a man's face, a warrior/hunter with a stern, (angry like) gaze, as if he's stalking the viewer. He's in a jungle world, so his face is slightly hidden in green jungle foliage, and is surrounded enough that only his face is visible, the main focus of the front cover.
He's not human, but human like, with four arms, and resembles a native American race and culture. His skin is dark, brownish orange. His face is painted with red and white war paint, and crow feathers are tied in his hair. (Think native American style face paint) The specific character in the story this represents has face paint with this arrangement: from the base of his eyes down, is painted bright red, with white tear-stripes trailing down through it. (this isn't absolutely necessary, but would be cool to see)
On the back cover, the green jungle foliage wraps around, with a black crow/or raven peering through the foliage instead of a man.
Text stuff:
I'd like for the teaser phrase to be on the front if possible, but is ok on the back. The author name should be on the bottom and the title prominent/bold, and maybe cracked/worn/or scratched looking, or dirty. please feel free to be creative with it, and make it custom if you wish. the title could also be partly rising out of the leafs, to give it more 3D feel, and pop off the page-so to speak. I'd like for the back description to be not too big, or too small and be easily readable.
Please feel free to be creative! I am open to consider various styles, or different takes on this design. ...in this story, crows are very symbolic and connected to this race of people, as well as a ghostly/spiritual realm (there are some allegorical elements in this story), so also feel really free! to branch out with concepts messing around with that idea. As an 2nd example idea: maybe an Illustrated/silhouette looking design with a native man transforming/breaking off into lots of crows that are flying away and scattering...
Thank you very much for joining, or considering my contest! I will try to give feedback as much as possible, and give updates. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This is my 2nd contest. I can also post cover examples of what I like if you need, or try to provide sketches. Or provide photos taken by myself that can be used.
Also, I may pick two winning designs at the very end, from different designers.
