I need a book cover (including the spine and back) for my novel “A Life Less Ordinary – Part 1 – The Genesis Days by Ruby Regalios”. I am looking for something eye-catching and dramatic that will stand out in Amazon's Kindle store as a thumbnail but will look equally compelling and intriguing on a bookshelf.
The story is written in the style of a memoir of a modern-day woman who thinks her life is ordinary.
Unbeknownst to her she is one of the two witnesses mentioned in the book of revelation in the Bible. This fact is alluded to but not fully revealed in this book, (it is the first of a planned three part saga). A spiritual battle has been passionately fought over her from the Fall to the present day and the story switches between the events of her life and all that is going on behind the scenes in the spiritual realm. A strong spiritual message is delivered in a down-to-earth, gritty, realistic, often humorous way, against the backdrop of the supernatural world of angels and demons.
It's difficult to pigeon-hole the genre as it covers such an epic subject, (the End-Times) and such a long time-span, (50 years of a woman's life, and from the Fall i.e. when the demons rebelled and were expelled from heaven - to the present day - with regard to the spiritual perspective). I think I would classify it as women's literature with a spiritual/supernatural slant.
I want to somehow convey to the reader that the book is about ordinariness being influenced by something very OUT of the ordinary. Two worlds intersecting. Eternal consequence. That sort of thing, without it necessarily looking like a fantasy novel. I want the prospective reader to be stirred and drawn to the central character and want to know more about her and her unusual story! I want it to appeal to the mainstream rather than readers of a particular niche.
I am thinking of possibly depicting the main character, Sarita, in the centre of the page with a background of a pool of blood, (to depict all the blood that has been shed during this battle, also symbolic of the shed blood of Jesus). She could be doing something “ordinary”, or she could be laying in a sarcophagus, (as she is kept in one for large parts of the story whilst a doppelgänger lives out “her” life)... this could make it look a bit too horror/fantasy though... Anyway, I'd like to show the battle of good versus evil re: her life. Possibly a dark, demonic looking hand or hands reaching up towards her whilst the “hand of God” hovers over her, or maybe an impression of the Holy Spirit in dove form over her head, or as a back-drop behind her. Maybe some imagery involving chains/ropes to show the fact that she is being held captive by demons...?
I envision the use of bold powerful colours such as blood red, black, gold and white. I would like the lettering to be in gold (or black) as necessary to make the title stand out. I want a cross to be interwoven with the capital O of Ordinary. I want it to be centred within the O, with the bottom part of the cross extending down and out of the circle. I see it as flaring out slightly at the ends and possibly having a pattern involving hearts at the ends of the cross. (This to be in gold.)
The back cover will have the blurb on it with ISBN info at the bottom. I am thinking of maybe showing the backs of a man and woman walking off together with their arms linked. He wearing white and her black. Him with a hood up, (her hair is shoulder-length and dark), showing their profiles. This would be a sort of out of focus, slightly fuzzy image. Either with the blood (splat or pool) as a background to them or with the edges of it “spilling” over onto the sides of the back cover.
Anyway, all that having been said – if you come up with something completely different that you think is worthy of a best-seller – then feel free to let your imagination run wild!
The competition is guaranteed and blind.
