I need a cover for a book I wrote called "Murdering My Youth." It is my memoir about my upbringing in an alcoholic family, while being an actress from age nine to age twenty-five. It takes the reader through some of the worst abuses and tries to put them into the context of how dysfunction is passed down through the generations, and how by embracing the truth of those abuses, I learned to stop the madness. Furthermore, it details my extremely close relationship with my mother, who got cancer and died during the height of my popularity on "All My Children."
I have a small photo of myself as a child that, to me, well illustrates both my character and how I accommodated my parents. It was at this age my father molested me in a drunken blackout. I have thought about using this photo on the front cover, ala Mary Karr or Jaycee Dugard, but don't want to copy their style too much. I also have a nice recent photo of myself that could be used for the front or back cover, but I am interested to see what you guys come up with! Feel free to use either idea or do something else entirely. I am looking for a clean yet eye-catching look. Typeface will be key. I am open to illustrations as well.
Another point of interest is the influence of a hand axe on my childhood and later my adult personality. After watching my mother chop up a gift from my father with this axe, I learned I could take that wild strength and use it to cut off certain feelings inside myself to get through difficult moments. Not exactly healthy, but it did help me to survive. This axe is a metaphor, clearly, and combined with the title could make for some really cool cover images. So please feel free to play around with that idea as well. Please no axes in my head, however! ;)
