I am looking for a book cover and ebook cover design for my new book that is releasing in December 2015. My genre is young adult, ages 15+. I am more partial to illustrations, and I will not accept any photo-manipulations that have images that I have to pay separately for. I am open to any ideas as long as they fit the spirit of the book and the characters are portrayed accurately. I will not accept any graphic images, as it will not fit the genre. Thank you for participating! Please message me if you have any questions that I do not answer below.
The book is called “Wayward Soul” and it is Book One in “The Wayward Gods Trilogy.” The book blurb is below, and I will also include character and setting descriptions.
Family always comes first.
When successful magical researcher Ellie Alwood finds her sister, Jana, murdered in their living room, her entire world is turned upside-down. Jana’s killer is a siekewa, a soul broker, that has claimed her soul forfeit for not holding up her end of a bargain. To save her sister, Ellie makes a deal with the creature: Jana’s eternal soul for an enchanted stone.
The stone belongs to the soul collectors, the spirit guides that lead the deceased to the afterlife. If they won’t give her the stone, Ellie will have to steal it. As she gets closer to her goal, she learns that giving the stone to a siekewa will put her entire world in danger. She will have to choose whether or not she is willing to put thousands of lives at risk or give up on her little sister.
Ellie is the main character. She is a twenty-five year old and a modern witch. She has pale skin and gray eyes. Her auburn hair is long (to her waist). She is a witch, so she has magicked away her freckles. She has a small nose and a slightly rounded face. She is not overweight, but she is not extremely thin either. She is 5’6” and 140 lbs. She usually wears light colors, favoring gray and browns. She dresses conservatively, as she is a college professor and works in a lab. She prefers to wear slacks or jeans and rarely wears skirts. She doesn’t like heels, but will wear them when required. She doesn’t smile often and is usually more serious. Her father died of an overdose when she and Jana were young, so she feels responsible for her younger sister.
Jana is Ellie’s younger sister, only twenty-two years old. She is still in college and lives in a small Victorian house with Ellie. Jana has shoulder length blonde curls. Her face is rounder than Ellie’s, with larger eyes and an infectious grin. Jana is extremely active, often competing in marathons and dragging Ellie out to run with her. Jana is a catalyst character in the book, but really doesn’t have much screen time. She likes to wear bright colors and is always on the go. She is a good student, but she has trouble holding a steady job. Her murder is made to look like a suicide, her wrists slit along the vein. Jana made a deal with the siekewa to be more like Ellie, but ended up backing out because of moral reasons. She decided her life and future lives were not more important than all the other souls that the siekewa would have destroyed by gaining the power of the collector’s stones.
The siekewa is called Drekvic, and he is a major character in the book. His looks are similar to Adam Lambert (with less make-up). His eyes are a pale blue, but he has that feminine look to him. His hair is black and his skin very pale. He wears mostly black suits with bright colored ties or vests, but not both at the same time. He is particularly fond of the color orange. Drekvic is a very motivated character. While he thinks stealing souls and making deals is fun, he is also working towards a very specific goal: merging reality with the spirit world and the beyond so that his parents can spend more time as a family and less time managing their responsibilities (his parents are the two gods that rule the dimensions). While he thinks this is a great idea, his mother thinks that it is not, as souls will never get a chance to be reborn and chaos will ensue as the creatures in the spirit world go into reality to eat humans. He is smitten with Ellie, and worked hard to make a deal with Jana so that he would have an excuse to talk to her.
Chester is the soul collector that gets assigned to protect Ellie when her search for the stone brings her to the spirit world. Chester is tall, 6’2”. He has a square jaw with light stubble and messy black hair that he wears loose around his face. He has dark brown eyes and tends to be extremely serious. He has a vine tattoo on his right arm that curls up his forearm and bicep. He was originally born in the early 1900’s and grew up in an influential family. He was married when he was eighteen and had a child soon after. His son died in an accident, and it prompted him to become a collector to try to save his son’s ghost. He dresses in black leather. He has a white opal stone that marks him as a collector that is always worn on a black choker around his neck.
Most of the story takes place in the spirit world, where the collectors live. Their city looks like it is made of spun glass, in an art nouveau type architecture. While the material looks like glass, it is impossible to see through unless there are windows. The flowers and trees that are landscaped into the city are of the same texture. The walkways are cobblestones in shape, but made of the same type of crystal. The walkways have circular platforms at every major intersection. These are landing pads, for collectors to teleport to. They are kept clear to keep people from colliding with one another.
The rest of the spirit world, is highly magical, with lots of different landscapes. It’s similar to earth, but there are not really any other truly civilized places, but it does have different colonies and magical cultures, but nothing highly developed like the collector’s cities.
