This short story is about an eleven year old who is placed on the streets in Las Vegas by her parents after she gets her first monthly time. Apparently that makes her a women now and she is old enough to make her own money by joining the family business. Her father a pimp, and her mother, his main girl, Emma knows her family is not "normal." In her case, like any caged animal, she will claw and fight her way out to survive. Her hope of belonging to someone, of being loved, of finding a real family will cause her to fight for what she wants. The thing is, Emma is not the only one who longs for a better family situation and the person she meets on the way will help them both get their wish.
You don't have to use any of this extra information. Emma is emaciated, but beautiful. Her hair black, and eyes green. At some point Emma notices a a daisy that grows in the cracks of the sidewalk, and wonders how something so beautiful, colorful, fragile even, could grow out from something bland, hard, and lifeless. The person who ends up saving her is a cop, one who works in Vice. Lt. Rycroft and his wife have just spent their life savings for in vitro to only fail. Their dreams of a family, all but gone until...Emma.
