Title : La Quête
Subtile : Tome 1 – Le gardien de la forêt maudite
Author : Eric Pépin
Translated, the title would be: The Quest - Book 1 - The guardian of the dark forest.
For the first time in a long long while in the world called Terres du Soleil (land of the Sun), a king or queen was removed from the throne. Before being captured, Queen Rhiann from the Eprahna kingdom sent her daughter Maíread and Kohl, the captain of the guard to find Thom, the guardian of the dark forest, a savage region from which very few people have come back alive.
Once they find the guardian and convince him to help them, they set out to find a way to defeat the tyrant who, rumor has it, is totally invincible. Along the way, they meet a few brave souls who are willing to join them:
R'War : a paladin. He his a tug, a race of man-tiger
Kalyndr: a young elf thief. She is probably the only elf left
Aylia: a young mage. She is human. Specializes in destruction spells.
Windy: another mage. She is half-trug and can change form between the two races at will. Specializes in illusion and protection spells.
Pram: a dwarf cleric. He is very knowledgeable with herbs and potions.
Together, they will travel to strange and sometimes exotic locales:
- the dark forest : a dark place protected by wood nymphs. It has many secrets that Thom and the nymphs are protecting.
- Crantry the city of mages: It is made of 5 levels. Each inner level is higher than the preceding one and protected by a wall of white stone. The 5th level is a black tower that contains the library, where all of the knowledge of the humans is kept.
- Prévert, the valley of fairies. Small women, no bigger than a hand who wield powerful magic. Each glow a different color.
- of course, in between, there is wilderness. Medieval in appearance.
While they are looking for a way to vanquish Dante, the tyrant is looking for the princess. He is convinced that she is the key to securing his hold on the kingdom. To achieve his goal, he sent out mercenaries after them and also Blackbolt, his servant. Blackbolt is a shadow that can achieve solid form and feeds on People's emotions.
Now for the cover:
Note: I am open to all ideas, but the following is how I envisioned it.
The book will be published both as an e-book and an ordinary book, so both formats should be provided.
The tone of the book should be rather dark and have an adult feel to it.
Each book will all have the same title (La Quête) and a subtitle. The title should be displayed prominently and have a specific style (maybe Celtic or viking). The title will act as a brand.
The subtitle should be under the title.
Under the subtitle, there should be 3 small images to indicate warnings about the contents of the book: Strong language (L in yellow box), Violence (V in a dark blue box) and Sexuality (X in a red box). The images are provided in the brief.
The name of the publishing company (Magidémo) should appear at the bottom of the cover page. A logo will replace the company’s name when it is ready.
The name of the author (Eric Pépin) will be displayed at the top.
On the spine, we need the title and subtitle. A small version of the logo will appear at the bottom of the spine. The 3 squares (small) with the content warning should appear just above the company logo.
On the back, there should be a place to put the ISBN code.
For the image on the cover, it would be nice if the back, spine and front made one continuous image. What do I want as an image? Maybe a forest since most of the book takes place in nature. It may also be the place where Thom lives, which is a small house beside a lake and a mountain with a flat top. A dead tree is located about 20-30 yards from the house. These are only suggestion. Since it is a fantasy book, it should have a “fantasy” feel to it.
Thom (the guardian) should definitely appear. He is not a very tall man (about 5’ 5”), but he is all muscles. He has long black hair, blue eyes and he sports a leather armor over a green tunic and a red headband. The headband is a must as it is very important later on. He looks to be in his late 20s, early 30s, but has a face that shows a lot of wisdom. His weapon is a silver bow with strange runes that can separate into two perfectly balanced swords. The swords curve a bit.
You may add other characters from the list mentioned above. Their description follows.
a) The companions
Maíread, the princess of the Kingdom of Eprahna. She is in her early 20s has long brown hair and brown eyes. She is armed with a mace and wears leather armor over a royal blue tunic. Her face is pretty, but not beautiful. She is about 5’5” and seems to be fit. Her quest is to free her mother, so she is driven.
Kohl is the princess’ bodyguard. He is 6’5”, has small cropped brown hair, brown eyes and has a scar from the left eye to the jaw. He looks intimidating and never smiles. He wears a leather armor over a red tunic. He is armed with a sword. Both weapon and armor look well-worn.
Kalyndr is a young thief. She is very pretty with her long blood-red hair and purple eyes. She looks to be in her early 20s and is about 5’4”. She wears a black leather armor with a silver belt buckle and is armed with a short sword and daggers.
R’War is a paladin. He is also a Trug, a man-tiger. He looks like a human, but has tiger-like eyes, ears and tail. The rest of the body looks human, but is covered with fur with tiger stripes. He uses a very shiny plate armor over a white tunic. His sword is also shiny and its handle is golden with jewels. He is about 6’6” and looks fierce.
Ailya is a mage. She is also in her early 20s. She is very beautiful and very powerful in destruction magic (lightning/fireball spells). She has long blond hair and blue eyes. She wears a dark blue, form fitting robe. She has a thin magic book attached to her waist (on the left) and a small dagger on the right.
Windy is also a mage. She is tall (about 6’). She has dark brown hair and light brown eyes. She wears grey robe that are less form-fitting than Ailya’s. Like Ailya, she has a small magic book attached to her waist and a dagger on her right. She is also half-trug, meaning she can assume a complete human shape or transform into a female trug (woman-tiger). Displaying her in either form is fine.
Pram is a cleric and also a dwarf. He is rather small with a dark long beard and brown eyes. He looks more like a wise man than a warrior. He wears a chain mail over a dark purple tunic. In battle, he is not afraid to use his trusty mace that glows when there is danger nearby, but prefer to stay behind and protect his companions.
b) Their enemies:
Blackbolt is a human-shaped shadow. He is black with red eyes and measures about 5’10”. His form fluctuates.
Dante is the man who usurped the throne and wants desperately to capture the princess. He is a tall, muscular man (about 6’2). He has short dark hair, dark brown eyes and sports a dark goatee. He sports a shiny armor with a red dragon. He wears a black cape and a green ring on in right middle finger. He is handsome in a certain way, but his dark look and sour disposition make him look evil.
Text on the back cover
The following text should appear at the back of the book.
** Since this is French, make sure not to miss any special characters (é, à, etc.) **
