I am self-publishing a children's book series for ages 8 and up. I have completed the first book and am looking for a book cover for it.
Here is the one-page summary of the story and book series:
Twelve year-old neighbors Rose and Kenyan-born Kenai discover the mystery behind their once celebrated coal-mining town of Redstone, Colorado by communicating with local spirits. Combining magical realism with historical fiction, the middle-grade children’s book series The Middle World explores the relationship between healing past tragedies and overcoming present-day struggles in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and beyond.
Just over 50,000 words, Book One of "The Middle World: Lady Bountiful and the Redstone Castle" recounts the true story of iron-and-coal-mining tycoon John Cleveland Osgood (“Cleve”) and his second wife, Swedish countess Alma Regina Shelgrem (also known as “Lady Bountiful”). This odd couple built a utopian-like coal-mining village during the early 1900’s as a social experiment. But not long after the overtaking of Osgood’s Colorado Fuel and Iron Company by John D. Rockefeller, Sr. and Jr., the couple’s 25,000 square-foot Redstone Castle (once named “Cleveholm”), situated on over 500 alpine acres, has haunted its multiple owners, inhabitants and town residents for almost a century. That is, until two tweens connect with Emmanuel, a fictional Italian immigrant spirit from the past who once shared a close scholarly friendship with Lady Bountiful.
Beckoning Lady Bountiful’s spirit together, Emmanuel, Rose and Kenai learn through Lady Bountiful’s own words more about her past, her relationship with Cleve and his continual haunting of the Redstone Castle, as well as what they can do to help all the local spirits currently trapped in the Middle World pass onto the Upper World. In the end, Lady Bountiful realizes that it’s not Cleve’s dominating force field that has kept her stuck in the Middle World for all these years, but rather her own self, by the power of her own choices and beliefs.
Subsequent books in The Middle World series will carry on the theme of Rose and Kenai’s spiritual healing of Colorado’s past and ecology. Other books will describe stories about the detrimental impacts of human development and natural catastrophes not only on people, but on the land and animals. Established characters and their spirits weave in and out of each book through their past lives, bringing with them a heightened awareness achieved by living on Earth, and in the Middle and Upper Worlds.
