I'm looking for an illustration for my upcoming horror novel (set in medieval/puritan times) to use on the section pages that divides the book into parts. Each section page features the title (for example, "Part One: The Nighttime Visitor") and a short poem that describes the theme/tone of that part of the book. I was hoping to have an illustration to accompany this text, something that would really help set the mood and tone (which is dark and scary) and help flesh out each page, giving it a distinct feel. The illustration I was picturing involves a large black figure creeping out of the woods. In the story, the main villain/antagonist is this supernatural presence the stalks the people of the town. I describe it in the book as a tall, faceless mass of darkness that's humanoid in shape but doesn't have any distinct limbs or features other than this very visceral, haunting darkness. I imagine a sense of dread that accompanies the creature but also this subtlety and lurking quality to it, as if it might be watching the characters from the background, but they don't always know it. Almost the impression of it moving closer and closer and closer...without them being fully aware.
The illustration will be used on the inner pages of my book, so I'll need something in black and white or grey scale. That said, I'd love for something fairly detailed with the woods and that ominous, lurking figure standing---watching---from just within the trees. However, I am open to any ideas (including other locations other than the woods; just another reminder that the story is set in medieval times), so I look forward to anything you come up with! Thanks!
