The BMSO presented its first concert season in 1976-77 with three orchestral concerts. Since that time, the organization has grown to a full six-concert season with additional special events each year. The BMSO presents an annual Dixieland Jazz concert and is the driving force behind Bismarck, North Dakota’s annual Fourth of July celebration at the North Dakota State Capitol. With an annual audience of more than 5,000 at our six subscription concerts and more than 15,000 including special events, the BMSO has entered a period of growth that is driving the decision to refocus its branding efforts.
The BMSO especially values artistic excellence, commitment to Bismarck-Mandan, accessibility to everyone, and education.

Without alienating our core constituency of more mature, more educated, higher income individuals, we would like to explore ways to engage younger audiences in the concert hall. This will not happen by simply having a "cool" logo, but by really connecting younger generations to our core values, stated above.

o If Bismarck and Mandan are on two separate lines, then no hyphen is needed
o If the cities appear side-by-side, then it should be “Bismarck-Mandan”
o Either way is acceptable
• We would like to have a recognizable and unique icon that can stand independent of the words “Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra”
• Try to highlight the letters “BMSO” in the design
• Unless you feel it absolutely necessary for your design, steer clear of fancy, flowery typeset – this can imply elitism and inaccessibility
