Refinement Brief: UNIQUE & MEMORABLE
Out of 71 designers, it has been narrowed down to six finalists so first of all - congrats! If you've gotten this far, it's doubtful you need them but remember with all your designs:
1) Is it unique?
2) Is it memorable?

Other Suggestions for the Finalists:
-We want our logo to be unique and memorable. often it is the simple changes or the small details that make the greatest impact. These are the 2 most important things to keep in mind as you're working for these last 2 days.
-It's ok to browse through other contests or sources for ideas, but trust me - if you think there's a shortcut by copying a logo/font/design somewhere else there's probably a dozen designers that have already done the same thing. You were selected as a finalist because of your perceived ability to come up with creative and original designs. That goes for graphics too. There's some standard colors, cupcake graphics, and fonts that I've seen over and over. Make sure you tweak it enough that it becomes your own and the $300 USD will go to the designer that earned it.
-Avoid ice cream/frozen yogurt or similar graphics. We're going for cupcakes here - not an ice cream sundae made to look like a cupcake :) If you're going to use one for a model, make sure you significantly alter the graphic so it is your own and resembles a cupcake - and it doesn't look like it should come with a cherry on top.
-Avoid cherries. Cherries are usually associated with ice cream, not cupcakes.
-Make the "Pro" and especially the "P" stand out. If you're going to use different colors or shades, the Pro should be the darker shade. Some of the most creative logos involve a cupcake somehow filling the hole in the P. Really like stuff like that but it is only one thing to experiment with. Have one or two designs where you play with the hole in the P - then move on to playing with something else.
-Most of the designs are brown pink or teal. Several of you are very good at throwing in some bright oranges, greens, or blues that really look great. If all your designs involve the same color scheme, try throwing some bright colors in there.
-Work in some other graphics. Some of the most creative graphics have included cupcakes that double as a ballerina's dress, a flower growing up the side of the P into a cupcake, cupcakes skipping and tripping along, or a flowerly design disguised as a bird on the bottom wrapper of the cupcake. Other memorable logos have involved 4 cupcakes inverted to make a square, the bottom of the P turning into a tray on which sits a cupcake, or where the cupcake literally is a creative letter P. Let your imagination run wild - it hasn't let you down yet.
These are just a few pointers to keep in mind. May the best designer win!

We have given guidelines, but feel free to use your creativity to come up with something amazing - there are no rules here. The successful designer will probably spend some time researching the cupcake industry. Feel free to be colorful and creative! Also keep in mind that if a cupcake graphic is included, make sure the design is original. Submit at least 3-4 different designs and I'll do my best to give specific feedback. Want to blow my mind? Submit 7 or 8 designs. Spend a half hour making 1 high quality AMAZING design. In the end, quality will win over quantity - but try it from every angle, you never know what I might like. The more you submit the harder you work, the more feedback you'll get. And there will be a cool $300 in your bank at the end of the week with a shot at a sweet longer-term gig.
To help you as the designer out, here are 16 things to play around with to get the creative juices flowing:
-experimenting with making the "P" really pop out as the main part of the logo (we'll be building a mobile app and this will come in handy, similar to the pinterest logo)
-experimenting with making the "Pro" part stand out more
-experiment with what I call duality. On the apple logo, this is where the negative space of the bite mark is identical to the positive space of the leaf. Genius. In this case it might be a graphic that doubles as part of a letter, or a topping or cupcake bottom that serves a dual purpose. Anything that makes the observer take a second look and think "genius".
-experiment with reflections (like the double image you see off the water), lighting, shadows, or shades. look around your apartment for textures, objects, or shapes you can play around with. you're a designer - distort reality.
-experimenting with different colors - bright, vibrant colors a plus.
-experiment with sketching. the 99 designs logo is a sketch. So get out a pencil and a piece of paper. Revisit the 1700s. Power down your MacBook Pro and spend some time letting your imagination run through cupcake fields of bliss. Then get in Photoshop or Illustrator or whatever program you use and translate your sketches into reality.
-experimenting with side view vs. top view of a cupcake
-experimenting with frosting, crumbs, sprinkles, bite marks, toppings, or anything else related to making eating or enjoying cupcakes
-experimenting with circles and sizes. one design you might blow up the cupcake to be jumbo size. the next it might be 2-3 minature ones. use your imagination
-experiment with the delivery angle. by that I mean our focus is on delivering cupcakes to the customers door in less than 24 hrs or in ordering ahead for pickup. We are NOT just opening another mom & pop shop. So get out a white board and some markers and have a brainstorming session. Go wild - every idea and every design are worth submitting, you never know what I might like.
-experiment with and without the "sweeten the day" phrase. again no rules here - you think you've come up with a better slogan, throw it in! we like the sweeten the day phrase enough that at least 1-2 or your designs should include it. but maybe try just the procupcakes by itself. play around and submit - there are no bad submissions the first round and who knows - I might just love it.
-experiment with backgrounds. use a black or dark colored background, or switch it to a light colored background
-experimenting with different fonts, types, or caps
-experimenting with placement. the eye reads left to right and top to bottom. move things around to give the graphic a different feel
-Forget searching google images, go look at pinterest for some cupcake ideas. How can you design a logo for a cupcake company when you can't even remember the last time you ate one? (if you try to rip off or copy a design I'll know, I've seen what's out there - we don't need a copyright lawsuit on our hands. Be original. Einstein said half the battle of being creative is know how to hide your sources)
-Get inside the head of a cupcake customer, maybe talk to a few people you know that might buy cupcakes. (like your mom, sister, girlfriend, or wife) And pump them for ideas. While it is critical that every design is original, you don't have to think of everything by yourself! And there's a sweet $300 that could be in your bank account for just a few hours of hard work.
Now a word of caution: don't feel like you have to incorporate all of these ideas at once, or even any of them. Focus on one or two things and hit it out of the park. Then start from scratch and focus on something different. Round 2 will be more for tweaking existing designs. This round is all about hard work - good luck!
