I want to communicate:
Mystery, curiosity, imagination, brooding, a light in the darkness. (even a hint of magic)
One additional note: The initial focus will be on e-book and Audible - therefore not as restrained by the size and orientation of a traditional book spine - although something that could be adapted to this form in future is welcome.
I should make another note here - it's not important to me to represent the notion of traditional books in the design - I'm not against it if it can still inspire curiosity and imagination, but it's definitely not a priority.
The name of the company, Sugarpine Press, is based on the final scene from my fantasy series, The Rahtrum Chronicles - the protagonist, a shape-shifter, has become an old man. He sits against the trunk of a mighty sugar pine tree in the high north and waits to die, but a powerful faerie, who loves him, comes to him and calls him to the Chrysaling - a rare process that allows a human deemed worthy to begin the transformation into a faerie.
The sugar pine is the largest pine tree in the world - and although I'm not totally against a symmetrical, triangular, representation - the sugar pine definitely isn't shaped like a capital A or a Christmas tree.
Some are incorporating a faerie - this is absolutely welcome. However, my fantasy world is harsh and very natural - one of the most powerful characters is a female Faerie who is so aggrieved by the loss of her only child that she eventually burns with actual fire and vengeance as she hunts her enemy. She's definitely not a Disney faerie and she doesn't wear clothes. She is quite fierce and you'll meet her in the Book 1 sample chapter if you skim it.
