The mother has two childen, including a young boy, 12, named Michael, who is blind, and a daughter, named Melody, who is ten. They are invited to a performance of the famous ballet, Swan Lake, two days before Christmas -- the gift of a generous patron on the arts who donates all of the theater to students and poor people for the performance. During the intermission, the boy asks his friend from the shelter, Antoine Flammonde, to take him to the orchastra pit to see the cello that is part of the orchestra. While he is being shown the cello, it turns out that he knows how to play and at the request of the Director of the Orchastra, he plays the famous song, Ava Maria, to the complete astonishment of everyone in the theater. The small, curly haired boy, with his large cello, becomes a celebrity almost overnight.
