We need a resizable and scalable poster for a new live production called Who's Bad 20/20: The Evolution of Pop. The main poster design can be 11x17 but will be used for print, digital and video in all sizes and layouts so each element of the poster must be on a separate layer in the final deliverable and should stand alone. Each element should also work in harmony with each other.
Our concert will tour domestically and internationally so the poster needs to give it that kind of scope, on epic proportions. Keep in mind that the viewer needs to recognize this is a music concert poster.
The possibilities are almost limitless with this design so as a suggestion, I would like for you to design a few elements on the poster -- EVOLUTION will be the theme that ties them together. We may end up using all of the elements or only some depending on how they turn out. Here is what I am envisioning:
ELEMENT #1: Black background, text should be gold, red, silver or white or a combinations of these colors (can be treated with outline, bevel, embossed, etc).
WHO'S BAD (color 1)
20/20 (color 1)
THE EVOLUTION (color 2)
O F P O P (color 2)
This is the name of the show and the main focus of the poster. It should be at the top or middle of the poster. WHO'S BAD should be the largest. THE EVOLUTION OF POP should be second largest. I think 20/20 should be the smallest.
The font for "WHO'S BAD 20/20: The EVOLUTION OF POP" needs to have some sort of element of evolution intertwined within the text.
This text should be the main focus of our poster. The above layout is merely a suggestion of how to space out the text; once you introduce the other elements of the poster, the text may need to be shifted around.
All of the text needs to be able to tell a story on its own, so we need to incorporate elements of evolution within the text itself. Use your imagination to come up with something that visually ties Evolution into the name of the show. Here are a couple suggestions:
Option 1. For "WHO'S BAD:" -- play with having stray chemical bond pieces coming off of some of the letters diagonally while maintaining clean look of JT type -- or intertwining a DNA strand into it.
Option 2. For "THE EVOLUTION OF POP" play with upper peaks of organic soundwaves above it, and the bottom spikes of digital soundwaves below it...
Option 3. For "EVOLUTION OF POP" have it branched out letter by letter as chemical bonds.
Option 4: You show me!
ELEMENT #2: DNA Strand
Behind the main text I would like our evolution theme portrayed with a giant strand of DNA as visualized in the other attached image. This should take up most of the background and should be red/black/gradient in color. The level of detail within the DNA strand is up to you, I am convinced that a simpler rendition can work if you come up with a cool design! The attached rendition is a good starting point, but could certainly work as is.
Creative Option: Try to "electrify" it a la the X-Men movie opening titles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5phFCbmC1jI
ELEMENT #3: Evolution "Molecule"
There is also a molecule on the bottom of the left of the same image as the DNA strand that I think could be another element of the poster (or a different cluster of bonds) but instead of the elements Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), Carbon (C), etc. we use the letters from the word "EVOLUTION OF POP" and space it out in a clever way using the molecule bonds to separate the word.
Another option for the molecule could be to connect silhouettes (of the artists we cover in our show) between the molecule bonds. Historically, we've used silhouettes in all of our poster designs and I'm not sure if that will be too busy but could be something fun to play with here.
ELEMENT #4: Live Music Graphic
Incorporate a live music element. This can be up to you, something that lets the viewer know that this is a live music event. On the attached DNA image there is a sound wave on the bottom. Something as simple and obvious as an audio waveform can work on our poster. Or something else entirely.
However you choose to incorporate this musical element, the more clever you are of merging the idea of music and evolution, the better!
ELEMENT #5: Artist silhouettes
Historically we have used silhouettes in our posters, so to stay consistent with our past I think it would be cool to include **full body** silhouettes of multiple artists in a line as shown in the attached image (evolution of man). We like the idea of using 1s and 0s like computer code (a la The Matrix) for the final silhouette. You can also include amino acids A, T, C, and G in addition to the 0s and 1s if you think that will work. I think this could drive the evolution point home! You could also play with fading 1s, 0s, A, T, C, G into all the silhouettes.
Artists you can choose from are: James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson, Prince, Jamiroquai, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Will.I.Am, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Daft Punk, etc. We need iconic poses so that each silhouette is immediately recognizable to the viewer. No more than 10 silhouettes, no less than 6.
Lastly, we need to leave room at the bottom of the poster for venues to put their information on the poster. This should be fairly easy to do on an 11x17 layout.
