LetsEatOut
We publish a restaurant guide, and for the next issue, we will be introducing 2D barcodes that will allow users to get additional information on their smartphones by 'scanning' the tag on the print pages.
We are also developing a web site and mobile site for the restaurant guide. We are a proponent of simple, beautiful design, and we expect this to be reflected in our work and in the illustration you'll provide.
We are targeting smartphone users who may be interested in eating out at restaurants. These people tend to be middle class with college education.
2D barcode technology is relatively new, and many people are not familiar with it. But it simply allows a smartphone with internet access to digitally connect to an image on a print page (the 2D) barcode.
In a very simple, intuitive, and straight forward illustration, I'd like people to understand what they need to do use the barcodes to get the information. In our case, we are using the Microsoft 2D barcode (called tag). The steps are as follow:
1) Download the application to your smartphone (Blackberry, iPhone, etc.) from gettag.mobi
2) With the smartphone camera, take a picture of the Microsoft Tag on the page for which you need more information
3) Information comes up on the smartphone
4) You can now interact with the information (video, text, image, etc.)
More info on Microsoft Tag and 2D barcode can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/tag
In your illustration, users should understand that the tag may be color or black & white, but the approach is exactly the same.
You may be able to use silhouettes, cartoon, or real images in the illustration (but do not mix the types). The illustration may also show only the hands, full body images, or anything in-between.
