We are starting a Mezcal brand and need a label design for the bottle.
Mezcal is a close relative of Tequila, but is seeing rapid growth and has recently become a fashionable alternative to Tequila and other spirits. Between 2007 and 2012, U.S. imports of Mezcal grew by over 50%.
The name of the brand is La Maldita, translated from Spanish as "The Curse". La Maldita will be distilled in the remote village town of Mochitlan, Guerrero, Mexico by small-scale agave growers.
The brand's founder is Zayu, the beautiful Mexican granddaughter of a Mochitlan Mezcal distiller (picture attached). Zayu's goal is to keep alive the family's heritage of Mezcal, honor her grandfather, and benefit the community of Mochitlan.
"La Maldita" (The Curse) was selected as the name for two reasons:
1) Those who drank Zayu's grandfather's Mezcal were enchanted, and some even were obsessed with its flavor, aroma, and taste.
2) Secondly, Zayu's ex-partner used to call her La Maldita because no matter what happened in their relationship and whomever else he met, he forever remained enchanted by Zayu -- the curse of Zayu.
The initial design played off Zayu's beauty, emphasizing the feminine form. Our view of that design (which is attached) is that it was not nearly subtle or upscale enough. The brand is intended for sophisticated audiences, and the label design needs to be appropriately nuanced, elegant and sophisticated.
Our first thoughts on the label design are to stay with an interpretation of the female form that retains a linkage to the story of Zayu, as the enchantress who casts a curse. But we are open to different interpretations as long as they somehow help reinforce the name "La Maldita".
The initial design also has a symbolic rendering of the agave plant, from which mezcal is made, so that is another possibility. Again, we are open to different interpretations.
In addition to the cash prize, the winner will also receive 5 complimentary bottles produced from the first batch of Las Maldita Mezcal.
Thank you in advance for your creativity!!
