Info over ons
Feel the adventure from following professional and amatuer journeys and expeditions around the world. Each will have their individual pages (shrunk to thumbnail-activated-modules on the homepage for quick viewing) using their own near real-time blogs, pics and videos, while we GPS track the journeys. There will be options to donate money to the expeditions with matching humanitarian funds. It is about expeditions, journeys and quests, and we often use those 3 words interchangeably. It is NOT a social media site, it is NOT for people to join, and it is NOT for just anyone's journeys. The journeys should be interesting, unique and fun to follow along. Target audience is just about anyone who is interested in adventure.
Search 'The Best Quest' on Facebook. If can't find it, see screenshot below.
Ideeën voor stijl/thema
We want the page to look hip, trendy and cool with an 'extreme adventure' flair. Obviously the amount of design has to be be kept to a minimum because there is a premium of space. Nevertheless, some things we like are piecemeal design with an amalgamation of paper mache cut-out designs, photos with torn, jagged or spash edges, texture, dirt, sand, old maps, cultural aspects from Asia, Mayan art, Africa, etc, 'art project' fonts such as degraded or from 1970's label-maker, etc, etc. Whether it is possible to have much room for ANY of this at all on the site still remains to be seen. It is critical to have the design of the page allow the user to pleasantly absorb the information without being confused by too much information. If you know of any more attractive map options (hopefully with nearly as powerful topography and GIS information as Google) that would be a plus.
HOMEPAGE: (first browser view) It will have a lot of information: dominating almost the entire page will be a world map (such as a standard Google map - but would you be able to invest a little time into attractive map options and include such information?) indicating thumbnails of the locations of all the expeditions. Second most important: a 'slide show band' showing the 'latest news' thumbnails across the bottom of the page. Perhaps the slide show band could look a little bit like a 'machine' that 'hovers' over the map. Very importantly, since our last 'gold' contest, we have decided that we would like the map and the slideshow bar to automatically fill and center on the viewer's browser window, no matter what size it is. Do you know how to design sections that automatically fit the browser? So the map would basically take up almost the whole page view or the complete page view of the browser. The important thing is that we can't afford to waste much space with margins, and it should automatically fill. Note also, that since our last contest, we have decided that it might be best to NOT have a left column. We are open to ideas, including the inclusion of this column, but we would like simplicity of the first view and simplicity in understanding what's going on in the world with the quests. It is my idea that only having the map in the background, and the slideshow band could acheive this but PLEASE feel free to improvise how you see fit. We are open to new ideas. The slideshow band would function a little bit like the one on the Yahoo homepage (www.yahoo.com). The photo thumbnails would be for each of the quests across the band but the thumbnail photos would be bigger than the Yahoo ones. When the slideshow cycles over the thumbnail, the quest's full module/widget (see below) would appear. Just as the Yahoo one, the user could mouse over the thumbnails to activate the widgets. (note that the thumbnails on the map (in the background) could also be moused-over for more detail) The slideshow band would default to showing 'latest news', but could also have an option to organize by 'the best quests' (ie, the highest rated quests (by critic's rating or users' star rating). The band would also have arrows on either end of the band so that users could scroll the slide show (by mouseover activation) further on either end (see www.spotadventures.com the actual map/image guide to the adventures). We somehow want ease of being able to cycle through the various quests, whether they have been organized by 'newest' or 'best'. If you know of any more attractive map options (hopefully with nearly as powerful topography and GIS information as Google) that would be a plus. It is critical to have the design of the page allow the user to pleasantly absorb the information without being confused by too much information. Please also take all the above description I have given you and feel free to completely change things around adding your own creative ideas!! So, probably the most essential part is that when the quests on the map or in any column/slideshow band are moused-over, a widget box for the journey/quest shows up: WIDGET BOXES: As described above, these would automatically pop up when thumbnails are moused-over on the map or columns/slideshow band. These widgets for each expedition include 1) the latest and/or greatest thumbnails (could be a slider and/or mouseover to enable the user to scroll through THESE photos), 2) a map showing the progress of their journey, step by step through waypoint 'pins', 3) the latest news from the expedition, 4) an overview description of the journey, 5) star-rating, 6) donation to the expedition connected to 'humanitarian cause' donation pulldown menus and 7) a link to the expedition's personal webpage. Perhaps the widget should appear as a separate object that 'hovers' over the map too. INDIVIDUAL QUEST PAGE: The individual expedition's page. Above I had mentioned the modules on the homepage, and it would basically contain all this information but in an expanded, more easitly viewable format. This page should easily display the attractiveness of the journey yet be easy to absorb and understand without too much noise. This page is a standard format that would basically be followed for every expedition. ALL QUESTS PAGE: The third page would show all quests, widget by widget, organized either by 'best quest' or 'latest news' TECHNICAL: On the more technical side, although this contest is for design, one must keep in mind the technical portion of the page: •We would like the site developed in CMS such as Drupal, Joomla or Wordpress •Neeed to develop and integrate donation/payment system •Need to develop a ranking system to rate expeditions •Need to develop file directory in which the expeditionist could upload 1) images taken from the field and 2) descriptions of findings (each possibly by satellite phone), which will most likely be in XML format and maintained or entered by an intern. ALL PAGES: We need room for advertisements. Perhaps a top banner would work best.
Wat te vermijden
Nothing too out-of-date. Avoid noisyness and strive for a clean look and ease of information. It is NOT a social media site, it is NOT for people to join, and it is NOT for just anyone's journeys. We don't need any general picture galleries, and we don't really need any top menu for anything. Possibly the only thing to have up there would be a small pulldown for searching by 'type' of quest. Any 'contact us' or standard links should be confined to a small bottom footer.
It may be a little overwhelming to figure out everything I am asking for. Please feel free to communicate and correspond with me often so you can best understand what I am trying to design! Thanks! We don't have a logo for 'The Best Quest' yet, although we have one for our mother company, Earth Cubed. Please feel free to come up with something, or design a sort of 'placeholder' The Best Quest title. We may also still call it "The Best Quests" with an 's'. Below I have attached a capture of the Facebook The Best Quest page for those who cannot access the page through searching Facebook for 'The Best Quest'. The very approximate wireframe below is just to get you started on the basic idea.
